Defect

Alamo Group Inc. (Alamo) is recalling certain 2012-2021 Schwarze A7 CNG, A8 CNG, and A9 CNG street sweepers mounted on Freightliner M2-112 chassis and equipped with a horizontal exhaust system. Lightweight debris, such as leaves, may build up in front of the sweeping head and accumulate against the chassis exhaust system.

Risk / consequence

Debris against the exhaust system increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Dealers will install an exhaust tailpipe extension tube, free of charge. Owners notification letters were mailed on January 14, 2022. Owners may contact Alamo Group customer service at 1-830-379-1480.

Chronology of events

  1. Oct 15, 2021

    On October 15, 2021, Schwarze Industries, Inc. ("Schwarze"), a subsidiary of Alamo Group, was notified by a customer of a vehicle fire involving an A-Series CNG sweeper.

  2. Oct 28, 2021

    On October 28, 2021, Schwarze, with the support of a third-party fire investigator, examined that sweeper.

  3. Nov 18, 2021

    On November 18, 2021 Schwarze was notified by a dealer of a second vehicle fire involving an A-Series CNG sweeper.

  4. Dec 14, 2021

    On December 14, 2021, Schwarze inspected that second sweeper. In the course of its investigation into both events, Schwarze examined manufacturing records for the A-series CNG sweepers.

  5. Dec 17, 2021

    On December 17, 2021, Alamo Group decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall to install a tailpipe extension to any A-Series CNG sweepers in the affected population that do not have a 56” tailpipe. As of December 17, 2021, Alamo Group is aware of no warranty claims and no injuries related to this issue. As to field or service reports, as noted above, Schwarze received on October 15, 2021, a customer report of a fire and received on November 18, 2021, a dealer report of a fire.
