Defect

E-One Incorporated (E-One) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Cyclone 2, Cyclone N, and Typhoon N vehicles. The transmission cooler may be insufficiently welded, which can result in engine coolant contaminating the transmission fluid.

Risk / consequence

Contaminated transmission fluid may cause transmission failure and a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the transmission cooler and fluids, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact E-ONE customer service at 1-352-237-1122.

Chronology of events

  1. Mar 23, 2023

    On March 23, 2023, SO 145099, began exhibiting transmission shifting issues.

  2. Mar 24, 2023

    On March 24, 2023, it was discovered that the transmission cooler was leaking and allowing engine coolant to contaminate the transmission fluid. E-ONE contacted Radicon, the manufacturer of the transmission cooler, and informed them of the issue.

  3. Mar 27, 2023

    On March 27, 2023, Radicon informed E-ONE that they found a problem in their welding process in the production units that they had in inventory.

  4. Apr 3, 2023

    On April 3, 2023, E-ONE received the faulty transmission cooler from truck SO 145099.

  5. Apr 28, 2023

    On April 28, 2023, Radicon informed E-ONE of their analyses of the returned transmission cooler and they informed E-ONE that the failure of the transmission cooler resulted from the same welding problem as Radicon found in their inventory.

  6. May 4, 2023

    On May 4, 2023, a second failed transmission cooler was returned to E-ONE.

  7. May 16, 2023

    On May 16, 2023, Radicon received the second transmission cooler and confirmed the same welding problem previously seen.

  8. Jun 8, 2023

    On June 8, 2023, E-ONE recommended to the REV Group Recall Committee that a recall be conducted for this issue.

  9. Jun 27, 2023

    On June 27, 2023, REV Group Recall Committee met and approved a recall be conducted for this issue.

  10. Jun 30, 2023

    On June 30, 2023, a NHTSA Recall was initiated.

  11. Sep 13, 2023

    On September 13, 2023, E-ONE was informed that the new replacement transmission cooler leaked on a truck that was affected by NHTSA 23V-459. E-ONE informed the manufacturer of the leak and further testing and investigation was initiated. Since this date, E-ONE has had numerous pressure and cyclic pressure tests, along with metallurgic testing conducted on the new replacement transmission cooler and have determined that all transmission coolers are affected expanding the affected populations of trucks.
