Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2023 Toyota 4Runner vehicles. The load carrying capacity modification label states the incorrect load carrying capacity, which can result in an overloaded vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk / consequence

An overloaded vehicle increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC will mail a new modified label, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 1, 2023. Owners may contact SET's customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET23A.

Chronology of events

1. September 2023

   During a routine process validation audit in late September 2023, SET discovered that an incorrect weight had been entered in the database which is used to calculate the load carrying capacity modification label. SET investigated and determined that the wrong factory wheel and tire weight was used causing the actual net accessory weight to be under reported in the system by two pounds. SET’s investigation found that for the affected vehicles, after the correct weight of the accessory wheels was input, the modified load carrying capacity did not reflect the total weight added between certification and first retail sale within 1% of the actual added weight as required by FMVSS 110. On October 5, 2023, SET decided to conduct a recall to address this issue on vehicles in the field.
