Defect
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra vehicles. The load carrying capacity modification label states the incorrect load carrying capacity, which can result in an overloaded vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk / consequence
An overloaded vehicle increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
SET will mail a new modified label, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 18, 2023. Owners may contact SET's customer service at 1-866-405-4226. SET's number for this recall is SET23B.
Chronology of events
- October 2023
During a routine process validation audit in late October 2023, SET discovered that an incorrect weight had been entered in the database which is used to calculate the load carrying capacity modification label. SET investigated and determined that on some vehicles the weight of the identical replacement parts (accessory attachment bolts and lug nuts) was counted towards the actual net accessory weight in addition to the originally installed parts. The replacement of these parts should have been net zero. SET’s investigation found that for the affected vehicles, after the error was corrected, the modified load carrying capacity did not reflect the total weight added between certification and first retail sale within 1% of the actual added weight as required by FMVSS 110, S10.2. On November 6, 2023, SET decided to conduct a recall to address this issue on vehicles in the field.
