Defect
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Outback and Legacy vehicles. A capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) may crack and short circuit, which can prevent the front passenger air bag from deploying in a crash.
Risk / consequence
An air bag that does not deploy during a crash can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the ODS sensors on the front passenger seat, free of charge. Owner notifications were mailed February 3, 2025. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WRA-24.

January 2021 – February 2024 - Subaru received 23 technical reports related to this condition. Subaru opened a returned part investigation with the supplier.

February 15, 2024 – The supplier submitted equipment recall 24E-016 to NHTSA. Mid-February to Mid-March, 2024 – Based on new information provided by the supplier, Subaru began its review process to evaluate the safety impact specific to Subaru vehicles and determine the potentially affected vehicle population.

March 15, 2024 – Subaru decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall campaign. Subaru is aware of 253 warranty claims related to this issue. Subaru is not aware of any injuries resulting from this condition.
