Defect
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar) is recalling certain 2025 International HV, LT, MV, and RH trucks. Tie rod assemblies may contain ball studs that may have been incorrectly heat-treated, which can cause them to break, and possibly result in tie rod failure.
Risk / consequence
Tie rod failure can cause a loss of vehicle steering control and increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the tie rod ends and realign the front axle, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2024. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar's number for this recall is 24509.

- Jun 3, 2024
• 06/03/2024 – Dana communicates to Navistar findings that certain Dana steer axle assemblies built with USK International’s tie rod ball studs were manufactured with less than the required hardness.
- Jun 5, 2024
• 6/05/2024 thru 6/12/2024: Navistar initiates ship hold on of all steer axles and vehicles at the assembly plants, finding 414 suspect date code tie rod assemblies out of 1,998 possible vehicles, and established the clean point at Escobedo, San Antonio and Tulsa assembly plants.

• 6/07/2024: USK communicates to Navistar that drag links provided to Navistar were not affected by this defect.
- Jun 11, 2024
• 06/11/2024 – Navistar receives Dana’s defect report for 24E-048. Dana also communicates to Navistar that suspect tie rod assemblies containing the suspect ball studs were shipped to Navistar’s aftermarket part distribution centers.

• 6/12/2024: Navistar’s aftermarket part distribution centers place suspect tie rod assembly part numbers on quarantine.

• 06/12/2024 – Navistar finalizes the suspect population.

• 06/13/2024 – Navistar declares a Safety Recall.
