Incorrectly Wired 12-Volt System May Cause Fire

Brinkley RV (Brinkley) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Model Z fifth wheels and Model Z-Air travel trailers. The 12-volt system may have been incorrectly wired without overcurrent protection and with undersized wiring for the refrigerator, which can result in overheating.

Risk / consequence

Overheated wiring can increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the wiring, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed in July 8, 2024. Owners may contact Brinkley customer service at 1-574-501-4280. Brinkley's number for this recall is REC-2402.

Chronology of events

1. May 3, 2024

   On 5/3/24, through standard Brinkley RV Safety/Quality escalation procedures, the Customer Care Center identified a Claim with multiple component failures. An investigation was opened on 5/3/24. Initial investigations indicated potential concerns with over-current protection and refrigerator wiring size, although predicted failures were not replicated through extensive testing efforts. Interim findings were reviewed with the Brinkley Safety Committee on 5/31/24. The Safety Committee directed the testing team to continue testing all reasonably replicated scenarios. The testing team published a final report dated 6/19/24 indicating that despite lack of consistent failures in testing, the potential for safety-related failures still exists in the subject population, and investigations confirmed code compliance and regulatory precedent to further pursue a remedy. A formal recall is being initiated on 6/25/24.
