Defect

Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2026 Model Y vehicles. The ring terminal of the horn ground wire may be improperly secured, allowing the circuit to open and preventing the horn from sounding.

Risk / consequence

An inoperable horn may prevent the driver from alerting other drivers as needed, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Tesla service will replace the steering wheel, free of charge. Owner notification letters were be mailed September 23, 2025. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla's number for this recall is SB-25-17-009.

Chronology of events

  1. Jul 9, 2025

    On July 9, 2025, during an end of line (EOL) review, the Tesla Gigafactory Texas team identified a steering wheel with intermittent horn function as a result of an improperly secured horn ground wire. From July 9, 2025, through July 22, 2025, Tesla worked with the supplier, and reviewed production and service records related to steering wheel horn ground wire attachment and steering wheel consumption. Based on the completion of this review, Tesla identified 5 vehicles on which the horn ground wire may have been improperly secured.

  2. Jul 23, 2025

    On July 23, 2025, having completed its investigation, Tesla made a determination to voluntarily recall the affected vehicles. As of July 22, 2025, Tesla has identified 2 warranty claims and zero field reports that may be related to the condition. Tesla is not aware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries that are or may be related to the condition.
