Defect

Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack) is recalling certain 2020-2025 Mack MD, 2019-2025 Anthem, Granite, 2024 MD Electric, and 2025 Pinnacle trucks equipped with a passenger bench seat. The seat belt anchorage bracket may be improperly welded. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

Risk / consequence

An improperly welded seat belt anchorage bracket can detach during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy

Dealers will install a reinforcement plate, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 21, 2026. Owners may contact Mack's customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack's number for this recall is SC0485. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning October 13, 2025.

Chronology of events

  1. Jun 24, 2024

    June 24, 2024; During C-level FMVSS 207/210 testing of a body-in-white cab representative of the Mack MD Generation 2 body, the weld nut plate for the common (bench seat configuration only) pelvic seatbelt anchor detached resulting in a failed test.

  2. Jul 16, 2024

    July 16, 2024; Cab supplier instructed to initiate containment protocol while internal investigation proceeds. Product issue log created.

  3. Jul 18, 2024

    July 18, 2024: After determining seat anchor weld nut plate was only tack welded, supplier work instructions updated to match engineering specification calling for full perimeter weld including specific welder settings.

  4. Jul 24, 2024

    July 24, 2024: FMVSS 207/210 test repeated and passed with properly welded nut plates. August 12-19, 2024: Potentially affected plants identified, and containment protocol initiated. Product Safety Evaluation Committee informed of potential issue although believed to be anomalous and resultant of recent supplier changes and likely limited to cabs in VGNA control. September 16-October 28, 2024: PSEC meets and expresses uncertainty with lack of field data and clarity of engineering data to clearly assess risk. Recommends escalation for awareness upon collection of additional field and engineering data to facilitate PSC decision-making. July 29 – August 18, 2025: Service and repair procedure developed and validated.

  5. Sep 9, 2025

    September 9, 2025: Service campaign initiated to inspect vehicles.

  6. Sep 19, 2025

    September 19, 2025: Dealer submits warranty claim and image providing definitive field confirmation of out-of-specification anchor nut plate welds similar to those present in the failed test.

  7. Sep 23, 2025

    September 23, 2025: Product Safety Evaluation Committee convenes and based on review of new information, recommends issue be escalated to Product Safety Committee for evaluation.

  8. Sep 29, 2025

    September 29, 2025: Product Safety Committee meets and determines that a product non-compliance exists and decides to initiate a recall. VGNA has identified one warranty claim in response to its service campaign. There have been no field reports, accidents or injuries reported related to this issue.
