Defect

Shyft Group (Shyft) is recalling certain 2024-2025 Blue Arc BA4L-800 vehicles. The mounting fasteners may loosen or detach, causing the steering gearbox to bind.

Risk / consequence

Binding in the gearbox can cause a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Shyft will replace the steering gearbox mounting bolts and washers, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 23, 2026. Owners may contact Shyft customer service at 1-800-237-7806. Shyft's number for this recall is 26-01.

Chronology of events

  1. Dec 16, 2025

    On December 16, 2025, while troubleshooting warning messages related to the steering system, Shyft technician observed a loose and missing steering gear mounting fastener. The vehicle was transported from California to Michigan for evaluation and removal of the gear box. On December 23, 2025, vehicle inspection was concluded, deformed washer was observed on two of the remaining fasteners. On

    January 6, 2026, a review of production records for the complainant vehicle was conducted to determine if fasteners were properly torqued. No deficiencies in torque were identified. On January 16, a torque test was conducted using new fasteners and washers. Deformation of certain washers was observed. Specification information was pulled for the washers and engineering analysis conducted. The washer hardness appeared to be too soft for the application. Shyft's technician continued to inspect vehicles and no loose steering gear mounting box fasteners were observed until February 9, 2026 Shyft technician identified a vehicle that exhibited a missing steering gear mounting box fastener with the remaining fasteners being loose. On February 10, 2026, Shyft determined a safety related defect may exist in the affected vehicles.
