Defect

International Motors, LLC (International) is recalling certain 2023-2027 IC Bus CESB school buses. The brake lines may have been installed with incorrect hardware, which can result in brake line damage and cause a leak.

Risk / consequence

A brake fluid leak can extend the distance required to stop, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect and replace the brake lines and brake line retainers as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 27, 2026. Owners may contact International's customer service at 1-800-448-7825. International's number for this recall is 26502. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning April 20, 2026.

Chronology of events

  1. Dec 2, 2025

    12/02/2025: During a vehicle inspection at the Tulsa Bus Assembly Plant, it was found that the brake line retainer did not properly retain the brake line. No contact between the brake line and other components was observed at the time.

  2. Dec 12, 2025

    12/12/2025: International determines that the improper hardware was used to mount the retainer, causing the retainer to lose tension. Tulsa bus plant began using different hardware to mount the retainer. At this time, there was no identified risk of brake line contact with other components.

  3. Jan 26, 2026

    01/26/2026: International receives communication from a dealer that a brake line had disengaged from the retainer and was rubbing on the steering shaft.

  4. Jan 30, 2026

    01/30/2026: International reviews pictures from the dealer report that indicate a hose not properly retained may contact the steering shaft.

  5. Feb 1, 2026

    02/01/2026: International implements a delivery stop at Tulsa Bus Assembly Plant. All affected vehicles were contained and repaired.

  6. Feb 2, 2026

    02/02/2026: International adds an inspection point to ensure that both brake lines are properly secured in the retainer.

  7. Feb 5, 2026

    02/05/2026: International meets to review the potential failure modes for contact between the brake line and steering shaft. International determines to perform a warranty analysis for contact between the brake line and steering shaft.

  8. Feb 11, 2026

    02/11/2026: International completes warranty analysis for contact between the brake line and steering shaft, finding 5 claims stating contact between the brake line and steering shaft.

  9. Feb 18, 2026

    02/18/2026: International finalizes the suspect population.

  10. Feb 19, 2026

    02/19/2026: International declares a safety recall.
