Defect

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2025 Jetta and Taos vehicles. The instrument panel may fail to display warning lights or gauges. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."

Risk / consequence

An instrument panel that does not display critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will update the instrument panel software and replace the instrument panel as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2026. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 90Z5. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on March 22, 2026.

Chronology of events

    October 2024: Initial claims identified and analysis began.

  2. February 2025

    February 2025: Technical analysis showed that vehicles will not start if topic is present. Topic handled as quality issue since no vehicle start was possible.

  3. February 2025

    February 2025 - February 2026: Ordinary software development cycles continue.

  4. Feb 5, 2026

    February 05, 2026: Due to the number of claims of vehicles with no-start condition, the topic was presented in the Pre-Product Safety Committee. During the meeting, a potential second failure mode was identified that could potentially lead to a condition that the vehicles would remain start-capable after failure. Further analysis requested.

  5. Feb 16, 2026

    February 16, 2026: Confirmation that, in rare cases, vehicles could remain start-capable after failure. New evaluation of topic initiated.

  6. Mar 18, 2026

    March 18, 2026: Topic was presented in Product Safety Committee and a non-compliance was determined.
