Disconnected Half-Shaft May Cause Loss of Drive Power

Lucid USA, Inc. (Lucid) is recalling certain 2024-2026 Air vehicles equipped with Pure Rear-Wheel Drive. Improperly secured bolts may allow the half-shaft to disconnect from the drive unit.

Risk / consequence

A disconnected half shaft can result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Lucid will remove and install new bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 18, 2026. Owners may contact Lucid at 1-888-995-8243. Lucid's number for this recall is SR-26-03-0. This recall is an expansion of previous NHTSA recall number 25V669.

Chronology of events

1. October 2025

   In October 2025, Lucid filed a recall (SR-25-03-0) identifying an affected population of Air Pure RWD vehicles based on a lash detection algorithm that used vehicle telematics data to identify vehicles potentially at risk of a half-shaft disengagement while driving. Lucid believed that the lash detection analysis was an adequate means of predicting which Lucid Air Pure RWD vehicles may experience a half-shaft disengagement while driving. After the October 2025 recall decision was made, Lucid discovered additional vehicles that were not part of the October 2025 recall had experienced half-shaft disengagements. The issue of the half-shaft disengagements in non-recalled vehicles was referred to Lucid’s Product Safety Working Group (PSWG) for consideration and evaluation. As part of its investigation, the PSWG evaluated the sensitivity of the lash detection algorithm and scope of the October 2025 recall. Based on its investigation, the PSWG identified 26 half-shaft issues that occurred on customer vehicles between October 2025 and February 2026 that it attributed to the same root cause as identified in the October 2025 recall. Lucid reviewed the total customer incidents. No customer incidents were found after the July 25, 2025 clean point and no incident vehicles had reached over 25,000 miles before failure. The PSWG briefed this issue to Lucid’s Product Safety Executive Council (PSEC) on March 19, 2026. The PSEC decided that there was an unreasonable risk to safety for Air Pure RWD vehicles manufactured before the July 25, 2025 clean point, which have less than 25,000 miles (as of the date of the recall filing), that have not already had a drive unit replacement, and were not included in Lucid’s recall SR-25-03-0. Lucid is currently planning on implementing the same remedy as identified in the October 2025 recall; however, Lucid is also currently developing a software detection strategy that includes a revised algorithm that can be installed on customer vehicles via an OTA update. This update will enable continuous, real-time, on-vehicle evaluation of each vehicle’s signals to proactively determine if a vehicle may be at risk of a half-shaft disengagement while driving and would provide a warning to the driver. This remedy would require a half-shaft bolt replacement on algorithmically identified vehicles, rather than replacing half-shaft bolts on vehicles when not identified and therefore not needed.
