Defect

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The rearview camera screen may display a distorted or blank image.

Risk / consequence

A rearview image that does not display correctly reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy

Dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 20, 2026. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is N262551720. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on April 2, 2026.

Chronology of events

  1. Feb 25, 2026

    On February 25, 2026, GM conducted a six-month review of field complaints associated with the rearview camera produced by supplier Sharp Electronics. GM became aware of eight parts returned to the supplier on February 2, 2025, and decided after its preliminary investigation to monitor field data every six months. GM’s supplier identified an issue with the bonding process used to assemble the camera housing that could weaken the adhesive bond on some assemblies. GM’s investigation found that the mounting configuration of the Sharp camera on the Chevrolet Malibu could expose it to moisture that may breach an insufficient housing bond. An analysis of field data completed on February 20, 2026, found 19,117 potentially related complaints of rearview camera display issues. GM received these reports between

    November 22, 2022 and January 29, 2026. GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with this condition on the Chevrolet Malibu. GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) decided to conduct a safety recall on March 26, 2026.
