Defect

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles. A software error in the occupant restraint controller module may cause the delayed deployment of the side air bags during a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 214, "Side Impact Protection."

Risk / consequence

Delayed air bag deployment during a crash increases the risk of injury.

Remedy

Dealers will update the occupant restraint controller module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 11, 2026. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 01D. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on May 28, 2026.

Chronology of events

  1. February 2023

    In February 2023, FCA US LLC ("FCA US") Engineering and Supplier Quality became aware of a small number of warranty incidents related to door airbag pressure sensors. From February 2023, through August 2025, FCA US Engineering and Supplier Quality analyzed returned door airbag pressure sensors through the warranty process. From August 2023, through September 2023, FCA US Engineering and Manufacturing conducted an enhanced problem-solving exercise to understand all potential failure modes of the door airbag pressure sensor related to the door environment.

    In May 2024, FCA US Engineering and Manufacturing modified a door wire harness.

  3. Jun 6, 2024

    On June 6, 2024, the FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance ("TSRC") organization opened an investigation into a potential issue related to the suspect vehicles which may experience delayed deployment of the side air bag during certain types of crashes. From June 2024, through March 2025, FCA US TSRC held regular meetings with FCA US Engineering, Supplier Quality, and Safety Performance to understand all potential failure modes related to door environment affecting airbag pressure sensor performance and analyze incoming data.

  4. January 2025

    In January 2025, FCA US Engineering collected and analyzed field data related to door wire harness routing and door airbag pressure sensor faults. From January 2025, through July 2025, FCA US Engineering, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, and Supplier Engineering conducted a second enhanced problem-solving exercise to understand all potential failure modes of the door airbag pressure sensor related to the door environment and software strategy. From July 2025, through April 2026, FCA US TSRC held regular meetings with FCA US Engineering and Safety Performance to analyze incoming data, understand all potential failure modes, and to determine the suspect population.

  5. Apr 22, 2026

    On April 22, 2026, FCA US TSRC recognized that a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to SAB deployment potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 571.214.

  6. May 14, 2026

    On May 14 2026, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, that a noncompliance to a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard exists in certain vehicles.
